Extract Text From a PDF

Pull all the text out of a PDF in seconds, ready to paste into an email, document, spreadsheet or AI tool. PDFSpark reads the PDF's text layer in your browser and gives you plain text to copy or download as a .txt file. Nothing is uploaded.

Your file is processed by your own browser and never uploaded. Most online tools send your document to their servers and delete it later — this one never receives it at all.

PDF to Text: frequently asked questions

How do I extract text from a PDF?

Open the PDF in PDFSpark's PDF to Text tool. It reads the text layer of each page in your browser and shows the result, which you can copy to your clipboard or download as a .txt file. For scanned PDFs that contain only images, use OCR PDF instead.

Why is no text extracted from my PDF?

The PDF is probably a scan or a photo of pages, so it contains images rather than real text. Try selecting a word in your PDF reader: if you can't, the text needs to be recognized with OCR first. PDFSpark's OCR PDF tool does that in your browser.

Will the formatting be kept?

PDF to Text produces plain text, so fonts, colors, images and exact layout are not included. Paragraphs and reading order usually come through well for simple documents, but multi-column pages, tables and headers can come out in an unexpected order. For layout-faithful editing, you'd need the original source file.

Can I copy text from a PDF without converting it?

Often, yes: select the text in your PDF reader and copy it. Converting is quicker when a document is long or when you need all of its text at once as a .txt file, since PDF to Text grabs every page in one step instead of copying page by page.

Is it safe to extract text from confidential PDFs?

Yes. PDFSpark extracts text in your browser, so the PDF and the text inside it never reach our servers. That's different from many online converters, which upload your file for processing. Your extracted text exists only on your device, in the preview and in any file you save.
